The Clerk's Role in the County Budget

Another important responsibility of the County Clerk’s Office is serving as the county’s Budget Officer.

While the Clerk’s Office does not approve the county budget, the office plays a major role in bringing all of the numbers together into one complete county budget.

Each elected office and department submits a proposed budget, and the Clerk’s Office works to compile those requests, organize the financial information, and prepare the official county budget documents that are ultimately reviewed and approved by the County Commission.

If elected County Clerk, one of my goals is to help keep both officeholders and commissioners updated monthly throughout the year — not just during budget season.

I believe regular budget updates can help officeholders better understand where they stand financially, how much remains in their budgets, and plan ahead for their offices' needs. At the same time, it gives commissioners a clearer overall picture of county revenues and expenses, enabling them to make informed decisions throughout the year.

And speaking of the budget — every budget needs revenue to support it.

Many people are surprised to learn that county general revenue is primarily funded by local sales and use taxes, not by real estate or personal property taxes.

Because county revenue is closely tied to spending and economic activity, careful budgeting and planning are very important.

If elected, I will make the county budget readily available for citizens to view and access.

I’m committed to continuing to learn, grow, and work hard for the people of Ray County. I would be honored to have your support as we continue honoring the past while leading into the future.
